IGN classifies GW as an "online RPG" or "persistent online RPG", not an MMO. Notably, GW2 was in the article you mentioned.

Poor APB...I didn't realize it was shutting down.

I guess you could do a quick fix to balance the game, you make pvp a little like the festival pvp where you have the snowball skills.

Ok so take a number of skills which is a fraction of those available and create a balanced pvp environment.

Ignore the rest for now then if you think you can work it ad a few more skills over time as long as it doesn't destroy what you have created.

Balance can probably be achieved if you stick to a much smaller pool of skills.

The negative side of doing it is the uproar from players whose favoured skills are left out.

Still a lot of work but probably an achievable goal unlike the present series of balances.

This. We should have all learned by this point to just expect the worst and if something good happens, then awesome. If we get nothing and the game falls further into abandonment, then we'll get exactly what we expected.
The Guild wars business model actually makes this what SHOULD be expected. IE, Anet makes content, and you purchase it. As soon as Anet announced that they would stop making campaigns and would make a new GW2, everyone should have realized that the baseline is no new content. Every new content we get is Anet trying to get us interested in GW2, not their business. And amazingly, Anet is a business at the core (Wow, what a shocker!).

Short: you don't pay anything to Anet, don't expect more content.

Well, you're both right, they could completely abandon the game and the community that built up around it and never update the game again.

Of course, no one would complain because everyone got exactly what they paid for, right?

And then, of course, the GW1 community would just LOVE to buy GW2 produced by the same people who were so sweet to us.</sarcasm>

Get real....

I bought lots of stuff after they stopped making campaigns. I really didnt care for some of it, but I thought the money would go to produce more content.

I dont expect any more expansions, but I do expect content updates. From a business perspective, you would want your consumers(GW1 players) happy with the original product, so they will buy the sequel.

Also, Anet said they would keep producing content for GW1. Thats why we are expecting it.

Personally, I think ANet should pay more attention to microtransactions. Thats how the F2P market makes its money, and in some cases F2P players spend more money on microtransactions than P2P MMOs.

Mmmm...pretty close, actually. If the community were reasonable, certainly. Anyone who enjoys (or enjoyed) the game when it was regularly updated, but is disgruntled enough by lacking updates because most of the devs are too busy building GW++ to work on regular updates (and, I stress regular, because we have gotten a bunch of stuff, for free, since GW:EN), is being unreasonable. You simply cannot extrapolate the quality or timeliness of updates now with the quality or service we'll get when GW2 releases, and anyone who tries is being, say it with me now, unreasonable.

I've never seen a community so adamant that a developer shower them with free updates so they'll acquiesce to buying a sequel. The quality of the sequel should stand on its own merits, and anyone threatening to not buy it (regardless of quality) because of past "injustices" (the definition here being "not updating the game regularly enough") is cutting their nose off to spite their face. By all means, complain if you don't like something, if a feature doesn't appeal to you or you think it's bad. Don't buy it if you don't like it, but this endless, ceaseless, implied threatening of swearing off GW2 because of how updates are (or are not) going now? It's *one more time* unreasonable.

Infrequent updates would be completely fine if they were actually good.

I agree with Skyy on that one. GW2 should have the right stay on its own. Obviously ANet made many mistakes with GW1, but the reason you (the greatest critics here on Guru) are still here is bound to the fact ANet did something well enough to keep you interested in this franchise.

On topic, GW:B is not dead yet, but WIK certainly is. Just give GW:B another synonymous, like "content updates once in a while" and you'll be fine.

This I do not understand at all. I bought stuff too. Why did I buy stuff? Because I wanted the things being sold. The costumes, storage, character slots, etc I bought because I wanted them. I did not buy them with some thought that they would lead to new content.

I think it is absolutely insane to purchase something and then think you will get 'something else' that you did not purchase.

Guild Wars is a GREAT game. Even with all the 'unbalanced' skills and all the other complaints made by people that are just bored now, it is still one of the best damned games ever made. If they NEVER fixed even one thing that people complain about here I would still play it and so would lots of other people.

When Guild Wars Beyond started I was THRILLED! WOW, we were told that there would be little if any new content to GW and lo and behold, New Content! Fun content at that.

Hey, sorry to rant but I am SICK of people CONSTANTLY complaining. ArenaNet has done a fine job of giving value for the money spent.

At this point, I was tremendously disappointed by the WiK stuff. It didn't live up to a tenth of the hype as the advertising was making it out to be.

I really don't care if the next GW:B comes or not. I've pretty much stopped playing except for the occasional troll and romp around FA.

Runes of Magic takes up most of my time now.

Small team or not, Anet doesn't listen to anybody for any reason now, not even the Test Krewe.

I don't know why they even bother.

Sometimes i think if only they used all the time spent on bs advertising on actually making stuff or listening to what the comunity wants everyone would be so much happier.

The last time i put any money in GW was three years ago. I really don't want anything more from Anet then the ability to play what i bought. If you have any maturity at all, this is the only logical conclusion.

Exactly.

Outside the irony of people repetitively posting "DEAD GAME!!!" here I'm consistently baffled at players who seem to still struggle with the concept of games having a life-span in conjunction with decreasing player numbers.

To state the obvious MMO players in particular seem to find this concept a major hurdle.

Tbh I assume most complainants come from more populated MMO's or haven't actually played GW for long, more so people with a subscription game mentality.

Pugging in GW is a struggle yes but Guilds seem to be ok.My alliance has picked up hugely in the last two weeks, including myself.

Until the servers close it's really ignorance or inexperience on show but it's sad to see this thread theme is still prevalent.

Gaming is cyclic.Period.

This thread again?

Sorry your 5 year old free to play game doesn't have monthly updates. Want constant change and action with one storyline beginning right after one ends? Read a book. Watch an anime. Play another game in between. Deal with it.

Um....I think we'd all be fine with that. Problem is that they keep saying it will get updated.

Tbh, if they stopped doing interviews making big claims then people would probably quit bitching about stuff not getting here fast enough. At least then we'd know that they're just letting the game rot and not expect anything.

Doubtful.

Gamers will whine, irrespective.

Atypically the "claims" are a direct response to complaints in order to sanctify the unrealistic expectations of obsessive gamers.

Don't believe the hype.
